About Kmetija Mahnič Farm

EXQUISITE WINES

WINE CELLAR

A RESTAURANT WITH HOMEMADE FOOD

Upon crossing the Slovenian-Croatian border, the first thing you catch sight of is a picturesque village of Dragonja spread over with vineyards, olive groves and cultivated areas are spread over.

Kmetija Mahnič Farm, located just a step away from the main road embraces you with a warm welcome serving produce, carefully grown by Nonno Gvido, Nonna Franka and Mr Adrijano all year long. The patio of their restaurant with a rustic charm gives an exceptional view across the salt pans to the sea and the nearby Kaštel village, to individuals and groups of tourist who are always made to feel settled here. Having an exquisite drink served by Ms Ingrid as well as some exceptional homemade food prepared by Nonna Franka and Mr Adrijano, many wish that the day would come to an end.

Kmetija Mahnič Farm is spread over 15 hectares of land and is home to olive plantations, orchards, vegetable fields, last but not least vineyards. The fifth Wine Queen of Slovenian Istria, Miss Kim Mahnič, is there to proudly present ten varieties that flourish in their vineyards namely, Malvasia, Refosco, white and black Burgundy, Bianchera, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Yellow Muscat, Momjan Muscat and Cipro.

The Mahnič Family

The beginnings of Kmetija Mahnič Farm date back to 1875, when grandfather Karlo had mainly been engaged in fruit growing. The first vineyards bore white and black Burgundy wine. After 1991, Mahnič Family, as it is today, seriously made viticulture their core business and planted new vineyards. Malvasia, Refosco, white and black Burgundy, Bianchera, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Yellow Muscat, Momjan Muscat and Cipro are flourishing on nine hectares.

Having studied agronomy, Mr Vili switched to viticulture. Wishing to offer wine tastings of different varieties on the farm and having the desire to preserve the old varieties, the Mahnič family began planting new vineyards began on their estate. Vili’s legacy paved the way to modern winemaking and to this day, this remains our vision.

NONNO GVIDO

Black Burgundy makes Nonno Gvido extremely happy.

“I took scions from a 73-year-old White Burgundy vineyard, which also had some Black Burgundy vines and I created 1.200 black burgundy vines in 15 years.”

NONNA FRANKA

Kmetija Mahnič Farm has always been home to a typical Istrian cuisine! Nonna Franka prepares food the old way – with plenty of time and even more plenty of love.

“Everyone says that sauerkraut à la Franka is like no other and nowhere else to be found!”

INGRID MAHNIČ

Also known as

“Wine Mother”

and

“Queen of Malvasia”.

Wine represents her life, which we can clearly see every time she presents it to us. She takes pride in Malvasia and proudly says that in Istria, there are not any bad sorts of Malvasia left- only good, better and the best ones remain.

ADRIJANO MAHNIČ

His love are peaches. This makes him grow the best peaches to be found in the whole world. Too bad, there are no words to describe their scent and taste.

This year, however, he took over Kmečki hram rustic restaurant as the food and beverage Manager where he will share his passion for food by serving home-made bread, corn minestrone known as “Bobići”, Istrian pasta called “Fusi”, polenta and other Istrian delicacies that simply taste wonderful.

“This minestrone speaks seven languages,”

he likes to joke.
